Look.
During moments like this, I should not run the shelter. I just want to take all of them home.

You know what I love? When tourists show up with their dogs/cats and expect me to bump appointments scheduled weeks in advance to treat incredibly minor injuries. If a local has to wait a few minutes for their check up, fine, but some of these poor animals with appointments have actual medical problems that I need to examine.
Some people are terribly obnoxious and rude. Now I have a place to vent, at least.

I was going to post about summer fundraiser ideas for the shelter, but I cannot top Keegan's masterpiece below me. Now I'm just too amused to think. I'll try anyway.
I was thinking something along the lines of a auction/dinner event. We would need the support of local businesses to donate some items, and we would of course give each organization recognition for their help and support. Also, I would need the help of my volunteers. Cora, Keegan, Shelly, Jimmy, Dean and Cameron? I'm looking at all of you. Also, anyone else that wants to help out!
I'm thinking it should take place in the warmer months. Perhaps sometime in July. I'm just throwing ideas around at this point, obviously. But if I'm going to organize this, I have to get started fairly soon. With ParksNet, you people get to hear my every thought. Lucky you!
That's all of now!

We currently have a dog in the shelter that humps everything and everyone. He is fixed, too. I feel bad, because I don't want to put other dogs in with him and he looks lonely in his cage, but at the same time, I really don't have the heart to subject others to his bad habit. I considered giving him a large stuffed toy to play with, but really, who is going to want to adopt a dog that cannot seem to stop mounting everything? He's a cute creature. Hopefully someone becomes attached to him and loves him in spite of his problems.
I say 'hopefully' because I really don't have any room for anymore animals at my house right now. I'd probably be killed if I tried to take in anyone else in.
The tourists are back, in other news. I know this because there are occasionally line ups at the grocery store once again. After living in Ice River for a little while, I've come to find this unsettling. I'm so used to breezing through without delays. I'm spoiled by our small town.

So, those puppies were adopted quickly! I'm really glad, but since I personally know all of the owners now, I'll be able to scold you if you don't bring them in for their check ups or fail to properly take care of them. Fear me, my new owners. I'm not a nice guy when it comes to the mistreatment of adorable animals.
This isn't to say that I'm assuming you'll mistreat your puppies, of course. Just make sure you don't let the little things outside unsupervised until that rogue bear is captured. I still fear for my poor Scampers. Thankfully, he cannot stand the snow, so I only let him out very briefly for this bathroom breaks. He's smaller than most cats, so the cold effects him more than most.
I just rambled about puppies for two paragraphs. What a fascinating read! But! One more thing. The little female looking directly at the camera in this litter is still available. If you know anyone who wants a puppy, let me know. They're so much easier to send out when they're young and cute. I don't want to miss the opportunity of giving her a good home.
That's all for now!

I came into work early this morning because Nathaniel lost his temper at me last night and I'm still embarrassed and uncomfortable about the entire situation I had some things to do with the shelter before the vet office opened for business, and by the time I took a break for lunch, there was a pile of snow outside and I could hardly see across the parking lot. Quite the storm we're getting! I could barely make it home.
Anyway! I thought I should post some bear information since our little friend is still giving us trouble. He's likely going to be shot if he's found, and this makes me sad. He's officially a 'problem bear'. People have probably been feeding him. Bastards. I'm sure you've heard it all before, but I thought it might be useful to someone. I'm not trying to step on any toes, wardens. I'm sure you've been saying this stuff all along as well.
So, first. Don't store your garbage outside. That one is fairly simple. Secondly, try to feed your pets inside. They tend to love dog and cat food as well. You might want to put off bird feeding and composting for a little while as well. If you have a yard and it's full of junk that is easy to move around, you might want to clear it so the bear has nothing to hide behind. That's always a good idea. And, most importantly, if you see a bear, stay inside and do not approach it. You may want to try to make a lot of noise in an attempt to scare it off, but since this particular bear has been hanging around people for a while, it might not work.
This advice probably sounds like a broken record to people from this area. I'll tell you - I never had to worry about this stuff in Scotland. But call a conservation officer if you spot the bear, yes? It's been outsmarting us for too long.

| Party? Yes? No? |
[02 Feb 2009|02:14am] |
So, I'm thinking of holding a Valentine's Day party. Kind of a town-wide thing. And you don't have to have a significant other! It would just be an excuse for a get-together of sorts. We can consider it my thanks to the community for all of the help at the shelter and such. And yes, you could still come if you do not volunteer.
Who would be interested in that sort of thing? It could be on Friday the 13th. Perhaps a mix of 'love' and 'horror'. I'm open to suggestions.

I accidentally poked myself with a needle today. Thankfully, it was clean and didn't manage to sink too far into my skin. Some dogs just find it impossible to stay still long enough to administer medication. I don't blame them, really. Things are far too exciting in a vet's office. They get to visit me, after all, and I'm probably their favourite person. It's very love-hate. Yes, I tend to take their rectal temperature, preform their surgeries, poke them with needles and keep them locked up in little cages during recovery, but I also give them a lot of love and treats. Not to mention, the interaction with other animals and all of the new smells are pleasing to some dogs. The cats don't seem to like it so much. I feel so bad for the poor darlings. Thankfully, all of you shelter volunteers have a magic touch and do nicely to make them feel at home. Even the really crotchety old cats.
Speaking of cats, our little box of kittens are doing well, and are ready to go to homes soon. The little sickly kitten has recovered and has established herself as the most vocal. I think she kind of pulls at people's heartstrings to get attention now, to be honest. She's so used to it, after all. People always feel the worst for the most unfortunate ones, and as a result, those are the ones that get held the most.
Anyway, that's all of my news for today. Things have improved significantly for me since the beginning of the week, and I'm sorry to all for any misfortunes that came into play as a result of the big storm. I suppose we really just have to respect the unpredictability of the weather around here. It's quite frightening sometimes.

| Entry One |
[04 Jan 2009|09:34pm] |
I have a strong feeling that these blogs are going to be used for gossiping, but suppose we'll wait and see what happens. Small towns are terrible for this. I also predict a post about rude or otherwise irritating tourists at least once a day. It's the price we all pay for taking residence in a provincial park.
So. I'm Elliot McCallum. As most of you know, I'm your local veterinary surgeon with the charming Scottish accent and wonderful singing voice. I have the dance moves to match as well. My second calling was theatre (No, not seriously), but animals are my true passion. They won out hands down. Some of my employees love my antics, and the animals, well. They're lucky they have a relatively sound-proof back room because they're not getting paid to be here. I've always been under the impression that animals enjoy a little cheery music here and there, but things can get fairly silly out front. And terribly loud. Unless, of course, someone is waiting for an appointment. We're always respectful and professional when forced to be at the Ice River Valley Veterinary Clinic.
In other news, someone left a box of four tiny kittens at our doors this morning. I'm currently in the process of examining them, but at least three of them look to be in fairly decent health. The other will need a bit of recovery time. If anyone competent is looking to take in a little fluff ball, you'll soon be in luck. Or an adult cat. I feel so bad for them. No one ever wants them and they just rot in the shelter. Maybe I can find a way to sneak a couple of them home. I can hardly live with the guilty stares they give me. Yes. They definitely blame me.
That's all for now!
